Creating Engaged Global Citizen-Leaders

It's really important to get outside of yourself, and get outside of the university, and your academics to be involved with the community. That can be our local community. It can also be, you know, more globally speaking our country, our world. Getting involved and working on research or collaborating with a faculty member, we're able to travel across the country. We took a student to our research conference in Canada last year. There's lots of opportunities to see new things and to diversify a little bit.

The mission of Fort Hays State University is to develop global citizens and leaders. There are many ways that they've been able to do that. And something that is encouraged us to do internships, and actually Fort Hayes, sends out an email to all the students that shows them a list of available internships throughout the community, you know, throughout the United States. And so that's really something that's important to students that are going to the workforce.

So for the past 10 years that I have been here, one of the committees I've been on really caters to the research experience on campus. I personally have received a grant from the National Science Foundation, which is intended to give students an international research experience. So it's not just the research, but it also really wants to students to have a cultural experience, and immersive experience in another community. It's an amazing opportunity-- I think for students.
